Multi-sensor cameras add the sensor first: /0/profile2/media.smp to /3/profile2/media.smp.

How to test an RTSP URL

    1. Open VLC, choose Media > Open Network Stream, paste the URL and press Play.
    2. No picture? Try the sub stream. If that plays, the main stream is too heavy for the network or the player.
    3. For the codec, resolution and frame rate the camera actually sends: ffprobe -rtsp_transport tcp "rtsp://…"
    4. Once it plays in VLC, add it to the recorder as a camera by RTSP URL (Hikvision: Custom protocol, Dahua: General).

    Questions installers ask

What is the default RTSP port?

554 for almost every IP camera brand. Foscam is the main exception: most of its cameras serve RTSP on the HTTP port, 88 by default. A camera can be set to any port, so check the network settings if 554 does not answer.

What is the difference between the main stream and the sub stream?

The main stream carries the full resolution the camera records. The sub stream is a lower resolution, lower bitrate copy meant for live grids and phones. Recorders use the main stream for recording and the sub stream for the multi-camera live view.

Why does my RTSP URL not work?

The usual causes are RTSP switched off in the camera (Reolink ships with it off), a wrong port, a password with special characters that were not percent-encoded, a firewall between the camera and the player, or the wrong stream path for the model. Test the URL in VLC first, then in the recorder.

Do I need ONVIF if I have the RTSP URL?

No. Many recorders and VMS can add a camera by its RTSP URL alone (Hikvision calls it Custom protocol, Dahua calls it General). ONVIF adds discovery and camera control, and for video it hands the recorder an RTSP URL anyway.

    Planning where the cameras go?

Place cameras on the real site map, see each camera's exact view in 3D and check pixel density before anyone buys or mounts a camera.
