6mm Standard
43.6° horizontal field of view - Complete coverage reference guide
About the 6mm lens
A 6mm lens narrows the view to about 50° — closer to the field of view of a portrait camera than a wide-angle CCTV lens. It trades the broad coverage of 4mm for significantly more pixel density at distance, making faces and license plates identifiable much further from the camera.
Best for
- •Driveway entrances, residential gates, and short approach roads where you want face/plate detail
- •Long corridors and warehouse aisles where the camera looks down the length of the space
- •Loading docks viewed from the back wall
- •Building entrances seen from across a parking lot or courtyard
Trade-offs
- •Coverage is noticeably narrower — a 6mm camera covers about 9m wide at 10m distance vs. ~14m with a 4mm lens
- •Multiple cameras may be required to cover wide areas that a single 4mm could handle
- •Less natural framing for room overview shots
Real-world example
On a 15-meter driveway, a 6mm lens captures clear face detail of approaching visitors while still framing the vehicle and surrounding context. In warehouses, mounting a 6mm camera at the end of an aisle provides clean view of the full length without wasting resolution on the racks themselves.
Compared to other focal lengths
6mm vs 4mm: roughly 35% less horizontal coverage, but pixel density at 10m distance increases by about 50%. 6mm vs 8mm: slightly wider, more flexible for general use, with only marginal loss in identification distance.
