    License plate camera distance and focal length

    Picking the right lens for plate capture comes down to one number: pixels-per-metre on the plate plane. Below 250 PPM the plate is unreadable for human review and useless for ANPR. Above 400 PPM you've over-spec'd the camera. The math is the same on every sensor.

    The PPM threshold for plate identification

    A European license plate is 520 × 110 mm. A US plate is 305 × 152 mm. To resolve the alphanumeric characters reliably, human readers need approximately 130 pixels across the long edge of the plate; ANPR software needs 150–200 pixels. Working back from there, 250 pixels per metre on the plane that the plate occupies is the EN 62676-4 Identify threshold. This is the same threshold the standard uses for face-identify in security applications.

    Lower than 250 PPM and the plate becomes a smear. Forensic specialists can sometimes recover plates from 150–200 PPM footage with super-resolution techniques, but only when the plate is stationary; moving vehicles require the full 250 PPM at the moment of capture.

    For ANPR systems intended for automated barrier control or law-enforcement evidence, push to 300–400 PPM with sub-degree tilt tolerance. The cost is exponential — same megapixel sensor, longer lens, narrower coverage angle, more cameras needed for the same scene.

    Working values for a 1/2.8" sensor (5.4 mm active width, the most common modern CCTV format), giving 250 PPM on the plate:

    These are floor values; in practice add 30% buffer for tilt, atmospheric loss and lens MTF roll-off at the corners. For 4:3 sensors and 1/2" or 1/3" formats, multiply distances by 0.8 / 1.2 respectively.     Mounting angle and shutter — the variables that ruin your plate capture

    Mounting angle. The plate must be roughly perpendicular to the lens axis at the capture moment. Vertical tilt over 25° starts to compress the plate aspect ratio and degrades character recognition. Horizontal yaw over 30° has the same effect. The practical rule is: mount the camera such that vehicles approach within ±15° of the lens axis at the read line.

    Shutter speed. A vehicle at 50 km/h covers 14 m/s. To freeze plate motion to under one pixel of blur, shutter must be at most 1/500 s, ideally 1/1000 s. This is independent of frame rate — a 30 fps stream can still use 1/2000 s shutter. The trade-off is light: short shutter means the sensor sees less light per frame and must compensate with higher gain (noise) or stronger IR illumination.

    IR wavelength. European and US plates use retroreflective coatings tuned for 850 nm IR. Cameras with 940 nm "stealth" IR underperform on plate capture by 30–50% compared to 850 nm equivalents. ANPR-specific camera lines (Hikvision iDS-2CD7A26, Dahua ITC-413, Axis P1455-LE-3 ANPR Kit) ship 850 nm illumination by default plus dedicated ANPR exposure modes that fight headlight bloom.

    Validating your design before install
