We took cctvdesigntool.com through the work we do every week — a plan in, cameras on it, a report out to a client — and wrote down where it stopped being useful. What the subscription actually covers, what the free tier holds, and what happens when the drawing has to leave the app.

A browser-based CCTV layout app, around since the mid-2010s. Free Starter (3 cameras, 3 devices per project, a 3-page report), then Premium at $6/mo or $72/yr for unlimited cameras, multi-floor projects and a branded PDF. The design surface is a flat 2D plan: you place a camera, it draws a cone, and everything underneath that cone is treated as level ground with the camera base.

Read the feature list the way you would read a spec on site. FOV cones, DORI and OODPCVS zone overlays, a pixels-per-metre readout, multi-floor topology, cable routing — every item on it is something drawn on a plan, and an overlay is a picture of a standard, not a deliverable under it. What we could not get out of the tool is the paperwork a tender asks you to attach: an EN 62676-4 coverage report, an Art. 35 DPIA worksheet, an Art. 30 record-of-processing schedule, an acceptance test protocol, per-country regulatory variants.

What the subscription actually includes

• It runs in a browser: We opened a tab and started drawing: no installer, no Windows box, no licence key tied to one machine. Credit where it is due — but in 2026 that is the price of entry in this category rather than a reason to choose it. Every browser-based competitor, the free ones included, clears the same bar.
• 2D layout with FOV cones and DORI bands: Cameras onto a floor plan, coverage cones, DORI distance bands, multi-floor projects, cable routing. For explaining an idea to a client who has never read a camera plan, that is genuinely enough, and what comes out is tidy.
• A branded PDF at the end: Premium lifts the 3-page cap and puts your logo on the report. Worth being clear about what that means downstream: the PDF is the way work leaves the tool, which is the problem we come back to below.

• The ground is assumed flat: There is no terrain model to set up, because there is no terrain. A sloped car park, a ramp, a loading bay below dock level, a hillside perimeter — the cone lands as if all of it were level with the camera base. On the sites we survey that is exactly where the blind spots live, and the drawing will not show them to you. CCTVplanner models ground elevation, obstacle shadows and mounting height in 3D, and what you see is the coverage after the slope.
• Coverage maths with no published basis: We went looking for the working behind the picture and, as of 2026-08-28, could not find it published anywhere: no cited standard, no sensor and lens model, no lux or IR reach calculation — nothing an engineer could re-derive, or defend when a client pushes back on a cone. You are asked to trust the drawing. We compute pixel density per EN 62676-4:2015 with the IEC 62676-4:2025 OODPCVS refresh, anchor camera behaviour to manufacturer datasheets, and print the numbers in the report so whoever reviews it can recompute them.

What ends up inside the file is stated nowhere, and that is the whole question: a DXF with every entity on one unnamed layer opens in AutoCAD and helps nobody downstream. Ask for a sample and open it before you commit — we ask for one from every tool we review, and so should your CAD contractor. CCTVplanner writes AC1021 with cameras, FOV cones, DORI zones, fences and cable routes on separate named layers, BLOCK and INSERT entities, SPLINE, ELLIPSE, HATCH and DIMENSION preserved, an ISO 5457 sheet frame and an ISO 7200 title block.

English-speaking installers who need a picture rather than a design: a house, a small shop, an indoor site with a flat floor and nobody downstream who will check the numbers. For that job it draws a tidy plan and prints it, and we would not talk anyone out of it.

Everyone else meets the ceiling fast. Outdoor sites with any slope, tenders that want an EN 62676-4 coverage report, clients who ask for the DPIA, contractors who want a DXF rather than a picture of one, crews that do not work in English, or simply a job that will not fit in three cameras. At that point the $72 a year buys you a drawing you then redo somewhere else.
